Phong Nha – Khe Sanh

Phong Nha – Khe Sanh

Distance: 245 kms

If at the Farmstay in the accommodation options a morning walk around the rice fields is a nice way to start the day. Met this family on my last one.

This is not a huge day distance wise but will take longer than you think especially if you are into photography. With an early start you’ll get it done comfortably though at a relaxed pace. I consider his stretch of Uncle Ho’s Road a must do experience. It’s one of the great ride days in Vietnam but there’s not much in the way of services along the way. Make sure you are fueled up and take water.

(A) Phong Nha – Ke Bang tourist centre to pick up a souvenir of the area maybe on your way out or a boat for a run through the Phong Nha Cave.

(B) Elephant Cave is a lovely wilderness area and a great photo stop.

(C) A roadside waterfall. Can be a bit messy in the middle of wet season.

(D) The only decent accommodation in this ride. Marked only for reference in the unlikely event of a problem.

Some wonderful views along the way to stop and take the peace and tranquility in.

(E) Historically decent food on this ride has been hard to come by but Ms Thu at this well set up roadside cafe has got us covered these days.

(F) A historic milestone at the junction where we wait and regroup so nobody goes the wrong way.

(G) Chenh Venh Waterfall is your afternoon swim spot. A great spot to put up for a break in any case.

(H) Historically accommodation has been very basic in Khe Sanh. This one is new and by far the best of the options.

(I) The US Military Combat Base is well worth a look for the modest entry fee. Quite a bit to learn there if you want to commit the time.
